The Lennox Children's
Cancer Fund
|
Registered as a
charity since May 1992. #1011325
Very few people are not touched
by the plight of children who are suffering, and Vincent Fitzmaurice,
(pictured above left), Trustee and Founder of the Lennox, was no
exception.
During time spent
working for Dr. Barnardo's Barkingside his interest in music led him to
organise a Christmas Carol Service once a year and, as Mums and Dads
proudly listened to their children singing "Silent Night," and shed
many a tear, Vincent was struck by the fact that although the children
were disabled, they were happy; and it was at this point he decided to
make a commitment to helping children in need
Having discovered
that more children die from cancer and leukaemia than from any other
disease, and that treatment can be extremely unpleasant, Vincent set
about convincing the Charity Commission that there was a need. Queen
Elizabeth hospital for Children (in Hackney), which had a small cancer
unit, were delighted to be offered help and, with the support of
friends and from countless local businesses and churches in Newham
(East London), the Children's Cancer Fund got off the ground. There
were many charities with similar names, so it was necessary to find a
distinctive title.
Behind the name
Lennox lies the
memory of Geoffrey Lennox, late church warden and assistant organist of
All Saints Parish Church, West Ham. As the charity was based initially
at All Saints Parish Church, it seemed more than appropriate that it be
named after Geoffrey who would have been delighted with the
achievements of the charity.
And so it stands,
THE LENNOX CHILDREN'S CANCER FUND, reflecting the dedicated and
compassionate approach that drives this small but efficient team
